Obituary

Charlene R. Oakley, 102, of Middletown entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 28, 2021. She was born on November 25, 1918 in Middletown and was the loving daughter of the late George W. and Clara E. (Slesser) Myers. Charlene married Francis L. Oakley Sr. on January 2, 1937 at Cathedral of the Assumption B.V.M. in Baltimore, MD. Charlene, most affectionately known as “Char, Gram, and Great Gram” leaves to celebrate her remarkable earthly life, her daughter Darlene Schmidt (Joe) of Middletown with whom she resided since 2011, her son, Francis L. Oakley, Jr. (Skip) of Londonderry Township and her sister, Alda R. Ryan of Middletown. In addition, she leaves to mourn her, grandchildren, Deaion Oakley of CO and her daughters, Ashley and Sydney, Eric Maximus of SC and his children Demi, Michaela, and Eric Michael, Alecia Oakley of CO and Andrea Winters of Lewisberry, PA, Melissa Wells (Jamal) of Harrisburg and their daughters Jordanah and Jaimesyn, JoAnn Byus (Rodney) of Carlisle and their children, Garrison, Isabella, Mia and Rodney Jr., Jared Schmidt (Jamie) of MT, and John Schmidt (Hope) of Portsmouth, VA and their sons Julian and Joseph and two great-great grandchildren that Char never had the chance to meet. Char was a true erudite and she committed her life to caring for others, and her greatest legacy is her family! Very early on in her life she wished she would have had the opportunity to go to law school; regrettably, she never got the chance to pursue that dream. Instead she encouraged and supported her grandchildren to seek and achieve their dreams! Char never allowed anyone to sway her from what she believed was the right thing to do and above all, she was so giving. She remained steadfast in her faith, having remained a member of Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary church even though she was not able to attend mass as she would have liked to. She worked many years ago at the Big M in Londonderry Township for the Rose family as a clerk and later she retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. She loved to go to the casino, play Bingo, and play her lottery numbers, but most of all she loved being with family. Her best fur companions were Baxter and Khloe, her beloved friends at her daughter and son-in-law’s home. In addition to her parents, Char was preceded in death by her husband, Francis L. Oakley, Sr. on April 1, 1985 as well as her three brothers, Gene, Charles, George, Jr.; six sisters, Evelyn, Catherine, Betty, Jane, Helen and Mary. A tribute to Char’s life will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021 with the Reverend Ted Keating presiding. Unfortunately services will be private and for immediate family only due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A memorial service and mass to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. The family wishes to thank the Lord for the Blessing of Char in our lives and for all those who helped and loved Char over her many years on this earth! “Char was a classy lady and a lady always knows when to leave!”
