Obituary for Goldie M. Goodling
Goldie Goodling of Dauphin passed away peacefully in the company of her family on March 12, two days before her 99th birthday. Goldie was born in Mount Pleasant Mills on March 14, 1921 to the late John Lewis and Addie (Peters) Maneval. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, J Norman Goodling, daughter Violet, son Raymond and 8 siblings.
Goldie is survived by son Donald & daughter Iris, both of Dauphin. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, numerous loving nieces, nephews and devoted friends.
Goldie lived a long full life. She grew up on a farm during the Great Depression learning the hard work necessary for the family’s survival. During World War II she went to work at Harrisburg Steel to support the war effort. In the 1950’s she waitressed at Howard Johnsons on the newly-completed Pennsylvania Turnpike in Middletown and in the 1960’s she worked as a seamstress at garment factories in Hummelstown and Dauphin.
On her farm in Stoney Creek, Goldie raised rabbits commercially and enjoyed tending a large vegetable garden. She preserved her produce and shared with others. Goldie also liked flower gardening and was a member of the Susquehanna Iris Society. For several years she grew a large variety of iris and lily plants that she sold at Saturdays Market.
Goldie’s hobbies included quilting, tatting and crochet crafts. She enjoyed days spent with the Quilt Guild at the East Shore Library. She continued to crochet until recently having donated many crocheted lap robes to the Church of God Home over the years. Goldie also liked to recite poetry and share stories from her youth with family and visitors even in her final weeks.
Goldie attended Stone Glen Church of God. Pastor Donald Price of Stone Glen will officiate graveside services at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery.
