Obituary for Herbert Joseph Kivler

Herbert J. Kivler, 70, of Harrisburg, passed away on September 8th, 2020 at Homeland Center.

Herb was born on September 30th, 1949. He spent his childhood in Plymouth, PA and as an adult resided in Paxtang, PA. He was the son of the late Stella and Herbert F. Kivler.

Herb graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1967. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Vietnam, where he received the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. Following his Honorable Discharge, he enrolled in Kings College and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. He was employed by Verizon for 33 years prior to his retirement.

Herb is survived by his wife of 34 years, Deborah, and his son Sean (partner Tammy Sheaffer); his sister Irene, Pittston, PA and niece Alison Melluzzo, Sayre, PA.

A kinder and gentler soul you couldn’t have found. Herb’s big belly laugh was so loud and joyful. He didn’t care if the joke was on him; he’d still roar with laughter. Herb was an avid golfer, a devoted Penn State fan, and a supportive and loving husband and father. His family will miss him so very much.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110,

Grave-side services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2020 at 11:00am in the Paxtang Cemetery. Covid-19 restrictions will apply. Masks and social distancing will be required.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Matinchek Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 260 East Main Street, Middletown, PA. Condolences may be shared online at www.matinchekfuneralhome.com
