Obituary

Louella “Joyce” Chainey
June 10, 1941 - January 16, 2021

Joyce Chainey, 79, entered into heaven on January 16, 2021 to be reunited with her husband, Richard Chainey Sr.; her parents, Perry and Elesha Childs; and her sister, Joanne McQuinn.

Joyce was born June 10, 1941 in Martinsburg, WV but spent the majority of her adolescence in Middletown, PA and was a 1959 graduate of Middletown High School. She became a devoted military spouse on August 15, 1959 and lived all around the world with her husband and children before settling in Biloxi, MS for 20 years. Upon her husband’s death in 1992, she returned to Middletown, PA where she was a school bus driver for 20 years.

Her time on Earth was spent joyously; she loved to travel and explored the country one campsite at a time with her loved ones. Christmas was her favorite time of year and she proudly displayed her decorations at every opportunity. Joyce was an avid clock collector and especially loved listening to each and every clock’s unique chime at the top of the hour. Above all other forms of happiness she had in life, Joyce was a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

“A Mother’s love is something that no one can explain.
It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.
It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may,
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away.”

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Susan Trahan (Danny) of Stafford, VA; daughter, Toni Chainey of Middletown, PA; son, Richard Chainey Jr.(Lori) of Middletown, PA; Seven grandchildren, Brett Trahan, Danielle Gourlay, Joseph Moore, Kyle Trahan, Kristine Diegel, Richard Chainey III, Mattayha Chainey, and one great-grandson Brayden Gourlay. She is also survived by her sister, Judith Souders, of Middletown, PA; brother, Perry Childs of Somerset, PA, several nieces and one nephew.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the excellent care Joyce received during her final years at Marian Manor assisted living facility in Stafford, VA.

Graveside services will be held on June 10, 2021 at 11 AM at Middletown Cemetery, 675 N. Spring Street, Middletown, PA 17057. Services will be subject to Covid regulations at the time of the service. I have so many memories of you. I remember when you were only two or three years old and you had die poisoning from a snowsuit and ended up in a hospital in West Virginia. I couldn't have been more than four or five years old but I remember seeing you laying in that hospital.
I remember when we were kids and you and Joanne used to pick on me all the time and you told me that I fought like a girl.
I remember your wedding and we really didn't want you to marry dick but it turned out you were right and we were wrong.
I remember camping trips with you and going to Aunt orla's and camping in her backyard with Joanne and many cousins.
I remember all the times we used to go to Hershey Park for the entertainment.
I remember visiting you and sitting with you in silence while you watched Little House on the prairie.
My last visit with you was a year ago on Thanksgiving and then again the beginning of December on my way back from Williamsburg. That was my last visit because of covid.
I'll remember you always and I love you.

My mind knows you are in a better place, but my heart is still broken. You are at peace and with Daddy, I am so thankful for that. Though it will be hard to live life without you, I am so thankful for all the memories that I will cherish forever!

Mom,

To my Mom, my friend
Thank you for all the school meetings, bowling tournaments, softball games, volleyball games you attended. Thank you for backing me up when I wanted to take shop instead of home ec. Thank you for encouraging me to think outside the box. Thank you for sharing your love of travel and exploring with me. Thank you for being there for myself and my kids. I treasure each camping trip we shared; Mount Rushmore, Disney, Happy Trails Camp ground, Williamsburg. Thank you for being present in my life and the lives of my children.

“The mother memories that are closest to my heart are the small, gentle ones…They have carried me through the years and given my life such firm foundation that id does not rock beneath flood or tempest” by Margaret Sanger

I love and miss you mom but knowing you are with dad makes me smile.

i remember celebrating your birthday with a river cruise. You had a big soft pretzel and were so happy and at peace.
