Obituary for Lucy J. Gerfen (Beadle)

Lucy June Gerfen, 90, passed from this life to the next at her home in Mill Hall, PA, Sunday, July 3, 2022. Born June 9, 1932 in Lykens, PA, Lucy was the daughter of Herbert and Ruth (Shutt) Beadle Sr. She attended Middletown High School prior to marrying her husband of 72 years, William C. Gerfen.  During her life she was employed as a seamstress, primarily with Nettie Frocks of Middletown and Hesteco of Hummelstown.
Lucy enjoyed the outdoors and spent many weekends and vacation times at the family cottage on Beech Island on the Susquehanna River, Middletown.   After Hurricane Agnes, the family began spending more time at their property on Summerson Mountain, North Bend, PA, where she and her husband moved after her retirement in 1986.
For many years Lucy was a Brownie/Girl Scout leader. She also participated in a bowling league while working at Nettie Frocks and once bowled a 200 score, of which she was very proud.  Lucy enjoyed entertaining and was very creative in planning themed family get-togethers, such as a Bicentennial Celebration, Spam Weekend, Garbage Can Weekend, a Chili Cookoff, a Hat Party, etc. She also enjoyed hosting parties for the "Factory Girls," who were some of the women she worked with over the years.
In addition to her husband, Lucy is survived by two daughters, Kathryn K. Deihm of Pottstown and Nancy L. Godfrey of Shippensburg; a sister, Dorothy Winters of Levittown; a brother, Herbert Beadle Jr. (Mary Kathryn) of Webster, NY; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
